Summer has come and gone much too quickly. Tomorrow is my final day of babysitting the Lehouiller children (mostly just chauferring them really) and I move up to East Lansing on Sunday. This summer has been ridiculously busy-graduation parties, Italy, a family reunion, running, playing pick-up soccer, and trying to fit in a lot of time with my friends and family before we all part ways.
Last night, I attended the Battle Creek Community Foundation's annual meeting and scholarship reception. It took place at Dudley Elementary School, a new STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) academy, one of the Battle Creek Public School's elementary schools. It was a wonderful showcase of some of the best aspects of our community. There were dozens of donors, foundation trustees, stakeholders, and community leaders. Dr. Linda Hicks, Battle Creek Public School's superintendent, was one of the keynote speakers and she was very inspiring. She has quite the vision for the school district and is implementing several key changes to the curriculum and teaching methods such as a freshman academy, more hands-on learning, and a team-teaching approach in the middle schools. She emphasized that failure is not an option and that we have to start looking to the future, not the past. Also, the food for the dinner was from many local eateries including Malia's Mediterranean Bistro, MOO-Ville Creamery, and Cornwell's Turkeyville. They also had several local farms represented. The menu was spectacular! There was pulled pork and sliced turkey on homemade rolls, grilled vegetable skewers, cheese cubes (pepper jack, havarti, and monterey jack-I think), bread-zucchini, sweet potato (that was amazing), rosemary, garlic, and parmesan, corn on the cob, veggie chips and ice cream. It was very tasteful and so delicious!
Running update: I completed my 11 mile run this past weekend and will be doing a 12 mile run on Saturday morning. I ran a few hill repeats with Patricia at Leila Arboretum on Tuesday, but I was not feeling real great. I need to work on keeping a steady pace as my tempo run this morning was quite sad.
2 days til move-in!
